Robert McGinnis is the senior account manager at CarSim. He handles OEM, Tier 1 suppliers, academic accounts, and also engineers the QuadDS simulator. He has a background in mechanical engineering and a wealth of experience in product marketing. McGinnis, in short, is familiar with all aspect of the simulation business.

Mechanical Simulation and D-BOX have been working together for the past four years. An encounter at IITSEC (Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference) allowed D-BOX to demonstrate the flexibility of its platform, and its ease of integration with the company’s existing platforms.
“Some of our customers use hexapod simulators,” says McGinnis, “but frequently they are too complicated and the motion does not relate to the wide range of drivers we need to engage with. We also have a lot of experience with fixed-base driving simulators and find that drivers need more than steering feedback to get a sense of driving dynamics. D-BOX proved to be a more nimble option.
Mechanical Simulation builds simulators for a variety of customers. Some require the company to create a complete virtual driving environment where they can test drive newly imagined vehicles before they’re built, relying on CarSim’s highly accurate vehicle dynamics model to test their braking, suspension, and active safety applications. Others, like the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), use it for accident replication. Replaying scenarios helps them to determine the cause – human error, stability, etc. – and design a safer vehicle.
The value of motion is clear to McGinnis.
Whenever I start a conversation with a new client, motion is always on the table. While we’ll accommodate customers who don’t think they have room in their budget for motion, I’ll always make sure they get to test-drive the simulator with and without motion. Once they experience the high fidelity motion, virtually all customers find the budget to include the motion.
